Hongmeng OS is an operating system made by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.
Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd is a Chinese company that specializes in telecommunication equipment and sells consumer electronics. The company was founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, with its headquarters in Shenzhen, Guangdong province.
Huawei has been flourishing ever since it started from phone switches and has expanded its business to include telecommunication networks as well. Huawei expanded its horizons and now delivers its products to 170 countries.
Huawei overtook Ericsson in 2012 as the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world, and overtook Apple in 2018 as the second-largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world, behind Samsung Electronics.
By the end of 2018, it was reported that the annual revenue of Huawei had risen to US$108.5 billion in 2018, which was a 21% increase over 2017.
Resentment between Huawei and the US government leading to the launch:
Seeing this rapid growth, there was growing tension between the government of the United States of America and Huawei. This March, the CEO of Huawei’s consumer business division announced that in the case of growing resentments, Huawei has already built an operating system for the smartphones and the computers, if they couldn’t use the Android or Windows system.
Hence Huawei OS Hongmeng was introduced. In May the US president, Donald Trump imposed business restrictions on Huawei, which included that Google had stopped giving its Android services to Huawei.
As all the Huawei devices were using the Android operating system, it was a push back for Huawei, but Huawei was prepared for any such events with its new technology Huawei OS Hongmeng that was in development since 2012.
This operating system had the advantage that it is universal, which means that it can be used in laptops, smartphones, notebooks, tablets, TV and all other kinds of devices. This operating system will be ready by this fall and a version for the global market will be released in the first or the second quarter of the next year; 2020.
Registering the Trademark of Hongmeng OS:
Huawei has registered its trademark “Hongmeng” in China, this application is registered as Operating System Program, Computer Operating Program, and Computer Operating Software. This application has its registration until May 13, 2029. It has also registered as the “Huawei ARK OS” trademark at EUIPPO, in the same categories.
Leaked features of Hongmeng OS :
This OS is said to be 60 percent more efficient and faster than the Android OS. It is also said to support the IOS apps however, there is no official statement that confirms these sayings.
According to another report Huawei has allegedly shipped 1 million smartphones with the software onboard for testing, and with the compatibility to run all Android applications. The App store of Huawei OS Hongmeng is known as “App Gallery”, which would support all the android applications.
This new OS functions with increased security, which helps protect personal data. Contrary to this, Google thinks that Huawei can’t provide the level of security that they do, hence making it more susceptible to hack. Although Huawei is going to use this system in some of the Xiaomi and OPPO phones according to the analysts this system is not ready to be introduced to the flagship phones.
Naming the OS:
The name of this operating system was not confirmed until recently. It is a possibility that the official name of this operating system is changed by the time of its release. However, according to the registered trademark, the name of Huawei OS is said to be “Hongmeng” in China and “Huawei ARK OS” globally.
The Huawei founder Ren is reported to have said, that they still lack a good application ecosystem compared to Apple and Google, which will take a few years to develop.
We have recently been witnessing some contrary statements from the Huawei officials, but nothing can be confirmed yet. Looking forward to new confirmed details and the final product that can be a game-changer for Huawei and would bring more competition for Apple and Google!
