Modern Warfare 2 from the Call of Duty franchise is a masterpiece from developers, amongst their other top titles. But, recently when players shifted to Windows 11, they found out that the Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) started crashing constantly. What is the reason? Well, in this scenario, there are multiple reasons behind the game crashing, as we will explore them below in our guide.
Modern Warfare 2 Minimum Requirements
First of all, you need to make sure that your system surpasses the minimum requirements of the game. Most of the time, crashing in any game is because of your system not being able to pull it off.
- Intel Core i3 6100 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200
- Nvidia Gforce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 470
- 8 GB RAM
- 125 GB ROM
- DX 12 availability
If you have the above minimum requirements of MW2, then you are good to proceed with the guide.
Steam Game File Verification
The most logical reason behind a game crashing constantly is its files. When the files are missing from the installed folder, or they become corrupted, the game simply doesn’t launch and starts crashing.
But, how would you know which one is deleted or corrupted? You don’t have to because Steam Launcher has a built-in function to Verify the Integrity of Game Files, checking them out and fixing them one by one. How to do it?
- Go to Steam Launcher
- Proceed to the Library Tab
- Right-click on the MW2 Icon
- Go to Properties
- Find the Files Tab
- Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files
It does take some time, but be patient and let the Steam Launcher do its work. If you are on Battle.net, you can also do the same verification, but here it is called Repairing Game Files on Battle.net.
Disable Steam in-game Overlay
Most of the apps might have random or constant crashes on Windows 11 if they have the Steam in-game Overlay enabled, which is automatically On. You will have to disable it in order to fix MW2 Crashing on Windows 11.
- Go to Steam Library
- Right-click on MW2 Icon
- Go to Properties
- In the General Tab, uncheck (untick) the “Enable Steam Overlay”
If you have Discord or Nvidia Overlay as well, you might have to disable those with the same settings method.
Updating Drivers, Game, GPU and Windows
In case something is quite outdated and the game is running on the latest update, it might cause compatibility issues resulting in crashes. Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) also kept crashing on Windows 11 for the same reason. So, you must update your Drivers to the Latest, alongside your Windows. Make sure that the game is running on the latest update and also Download the Latest Drivers for GPU. But, how to do it all?
- Write Updates on the bottom left side of Windows 11, and Enter. Check for Updates there, as it will update your drivers as well as Windows.
- For Nvidia users, you can use Nvidia Experience to download the latest GPU Drivers. Also, the AMD users can use the AMD Adrenaline software.
Check Background Apps
Sometimes the issue is not with the game nor the system, but rather the apps that are running in the background.
- First and foremost, right-click on the bottom bar, and click on Task Manager
- Check for all the processes, and eliminate any that might be resource-draining
- Go to the startup tab and disable the extra apps running automatically when Windows 11 Restarts
- Finally, Restart your system and come back to play the game without crashes
Disable Antivirus and Firewall
Sometimes the Antivirus will block game files from initializing as a safety measure, protecting your system from suspicious programs. Well, it is false information, but you need to disable the Antivirus or Whitelist the game files to Fix MW2 Constantly Crashing on Windows 11.
Did you know that there was a Modern Warfare 2 MW2 UAB Bug that players used to abuse in the game and always see enemies on the minimap?
Summary
Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) Crashes on Windows 11 because of various reasons. It could be that the system you are playing the game on isn’t meeting the minimum requirements of the game. On the other hand, it could also be that the files are missing or corrupted, Steam Overlay is messing this up, there is some resource-draining activity, and Antivirus is blocking the game files from responding.
