Netflix’s popular historical drama series, Vikings: Valhalla, is set to return for its third and final season. Created by Michael Hirst, who also created the original show, and produced by MGM, the spin-off series follows the journey of the famous Vikings Leif Eriksson, Freydis Eriksdottir, and Harald Sigurdsson. The first season starts with the St Brice’s Day Massacre in 1002 and ends with the Vikings’ age in 1066. The show has received positive feedback from fans and critics alike, with a 7.3 rating on Imbd and a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Netflix Vikings Valhalla Season 3 Release Date
Despite Netflix Vikings Valhalla Season 3 being the final season, Netflix is not done with Vikings: Valhalla. The streaming platform is also working on a mobile game in collaboration with Tilting Point. Season three is already filmed, with filming starting in May and ending in October 2022. The final season will have 8 episodes like the previous seasons, and the budget for each episode is from $3 to $5M.
Season three is expected to be released by the end of this year or early 2024. Even though the show ends with season 3, showrunner Jeb Stuart has expressed his desire to continue the story beyond season 3, depending on Netflix’s decision.
Plot
According to Jeb Stuart, season three is going to be “very interesting”;
“Season three is very exciting and my Vikings get out of Scandinavia, so we have lots of great surprises and stories for season three.”
Season two ended with three Vikings, Freydis Eriksdottír, Leif Erikson, and Harald Sigurdsson going on different ways. Freydis gave birth to her son in Jomsborg. Leif and Harald are in the city of Constantinople.
Jeb Stuart also revealed that the new season has going to have more blood baths as Viking’s exploration of new lands will cause more wars.
Even though the show ends with season 3, showrunner Jeb Stuart told DigitalSpy that he would love to go beyond a season;
“My story carries on past [a third season] and I would love more time to tell the full story. I would love more time to get to the fact that William the Conqueror puts an end to the Viking Age.”
However, it also depends on Netflix if they will continue the show after season 3.
